Managing Stress through Yoga – Wrapping it Up
In the first three parts of this series “What is Yoga?,” “Just Breathe,” and “Strike a Pose,” we’ve explored how Yoga is a great way to manage stress and anxiety. So, could it be for you?

Come One, Come All
Yoga is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. In a typical hatha yoga class, there may be anywhere from 10 to 30 poses practiced. Poses range from the simplicity of child’s pose or corpse pose, both of which involve being very relaxed, to the most difficult poses that take years of practice to master.
Regardless of a person’s age or ability, yoga students are encouraged to be mindful of their bodies and not to exceed one’s personal limits. You do not have to do every pose or hold it as long as the instructor requests. This accepting and unpressured environment is, yet another, reason yoga is a wonderful and welcoming way to release stress and let go of anxiety.
A Master Plan
Utilizing yoga as a way to manage stress is best done as a lifestyle – versus simply a “quick fix.” Though, anyone can surely benefit from a calming yoga practice at the end of a hectic day, the best way to manage normal daily stress and better cope with the unexpected, is to incorporate yoga into your life in a more holistic way.
For example, starting the day off right with some yogic breathing techniques followed by a few sun salutations will help to awaken and prepare the body and mind for the day ahead. Then, as time moves on and stressors are encountered, why not take a moment for a few deep breaths. Neck rolls or spinals twists can be done when the tension of sitting at a desk or computer starts to mount. And, of course, ending the day with a complete and calming yoga practice prepares one for a good night’s sleep.
By incorporating yoga this way, you can have strength to carry you throughout the day, feel confident and balanced, and – when they arise – melt away tensions.
A Beautiful Practice for Managing Stress
Yoga offers a good tool for stress management and relaxation. Left unchecked, stress can lead to a variety of health problems, including headache, insomnia, back pain, burnout, and weight gain – just to mention a few. Yoga, with its attention on breathing and its quiet, precise movements, can draw your focus away from a busy, chaotic day and more on the calming moment as one moves the body through poses that require balance and concentration.
